The City, Salina's teen center, is looking for applicants for the seventh year of its leadership program, ALIVE at The City.
ALIVE stands for Asset Building, Leadership, Investment, Volunteering, and Education, and strives to produce leaders improving the quality of life in their communities, schools, homes, and jobs. About 150 students have graduated through this program, since it started in 2003.
Students in the ALIVE program will meet every other Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. Through this program, some of the things they will learn about are the 40 developmental assets, community leaders, coordinate group volunteer projects and how to fundraise. During the rest of the week they will complete homework assignments and special projects, and throughout the year each student will accomplish 25 hours of community service in Salina.
Students that successfully finish the program will then travel to a major city for a service project where they will volunteer on charitable projects.
Lindsay Mallard, program director for ALIVE, sees the trip as "a great way for the students to take all that they have learned in ALIVE and use it in a larger city. It is a wonderful experience for each of them to have; seeing the difference that they make while they volunteer."
In the past, students have traveled to Chicago, San Antonio, Atlanta and Orlando.
Students in grades 7-12 interested in the ALIVE program can contact Lindsay @ The City at 827.2028 or email lindsay@thecityonthenet.com. Participants will be chosen on the basis of a written application and a personal interview. Applications are available at The City or from your school counselor and are due by Friday, September 25.
