Governor Mark Parkinson issued a statement offering condolences to the family of Brian Etheridge, the deputy sheriff who was shot to death in Wichita Monday.
Investigators say Etheridge was dispatched at about noon Monday to an area southeast of Wichita where he was shot in the torso and the leg. He was taken to a local hospital where he died Monday evening.
Investigators believe the original larceny report was a "set-up" to lure an officer to the area. Officers shut down traffic and urged residents to leave an area about one mile around the crime scene as they looked for the shooter.
About four hours after the initial shooting, the suspect was shot to death by law officers.
Governor Parkinson said, quote, "This is a shocking and tragic reminder of the risk that law enforcement officers face every day in serving our state - we can never thank them enough for all that they do, it truly is a debt we cannot repay."
Sedgwick County Sheriff Bob Hinshaw said Etheridge was, quote, "an excellent deputy. He was 26-years-old and is survived by his wife and young child.
Officials have not released the name of the 27-year-old suspect.
