This is the time of year when many of us like to indulge in good food and drink.

Experts say that the average American can gain up to six pounds during the period from Thanksgiving to New Year.

You don't have to eliminate all holiday favorites to maintain weight during the seasonLinda York, a registered dietician says it isn't so much the big meal but the many holiday parties and other celebrations that can cause folks to put on the pounds.

She says to not starve yourself before meals, as that will cause you to eat more. She also says to eat in moderation and, if possible, skip the second-and-third helpings at the dinner table.

York adds that along with these tips, a little exercise is also a very good idea.
