Kansas lawmakers are taking a fresh look at policies and funding for public safety after four prison inmates escaped from a county jail this week.

The four were among 22 inmates from the Ellsworth Correctional Facility who were being housed in the Ottawa County jail in Minneapolis because of overcrowding in the state prison. All four were captured by Friday.

Rep. Pat Colloton says the state's prison population has been growing as budget cuts have reduced programs to prevent inmates from committing more crimes. She says she expects the escape will prompt renewed debate over funding for prisons and what resources are needed.

Gov. Sam Brownback's spokeswoman says he has proposed more money for prisons in the next state budget.

The holy emperor of Brownbakistan wants to build more prisons? What a surprise! Ummmmm..Not really. Building prisons is not the solution to the inmate problem. Had that been the case America would still just have it's first prison. Reformation of the entire prison system, making more low risk inmates work for state factories where they not only work cheap and pay taxes, They also save money so they aren't broke and desperate after their release. And legalizing and taxing marijuana will relieve an overpopulated sytem AND create substantial profits for our state while eliminating any of the cost to prosucute Marijauna "crime".

Jmmc its because of pot and other drugs that have caused people to kill, steal and fill our prisons. Your argument is like saying lets kill every person with a drug related crime along with every murderer and those that steal for any reason. Once found guilty they are taken out and eliminated. Now we no longer have filled prisons and would have billions in saving the costs to house these people. Problem solved.

"Other drugs" maybe, weed not so much. It's okay that you are anti-drug but to be against a harmless plant seems like a bit of an over reaction. Although I never mentioned killing in my "argument" I am all for execution of killers and those whom pray on children.

Name 3! Remember there are non-smokable derivatives available for those who need it as medicine , so any of the risks of smoking will not count. Here is your chance to convince me that cancer patients, aids patients and people with other serious ailments do not deserve to try ANYTHING that will aleviate there symptoms and stop their pain.

JMMCC WHERE ARE YOU GETTING YOUR FACTS FROM? YOU SAY YOU DO NOT USE DRUGS ARE YOU WILLING TO BE TESTED? I BET NOT. POT IS ILLEGAL PLAIN AND SIMPLE. THE PRIEST FROM SCARET HEART IS GAY PLAIN AND SIMPLE. SO ALL YOUR RAVING ABOUT AN ILLEGAL DRUG IS JUST THAT NOTHING. YOU SHOULD BE MORE CONCERNED FOR YOUR AND YOUR FAMILIES SAFETY WITH MURDERERS BEING HOUSE IN OUR TOWNS. THESE GUYS ESCAPE AND BY CHANCE COMES UPON YOU AND YOUR FAMILY THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SIT DOWN WITH ALL OF YOU AND SMOKE A JOINT. THE STATE HAS SCREWED UP AS WELL AS THE SHERIFF ON MINNEAPOLIS. FURTHER THE COUNT COMMISSIONERS OF OTTAWA COUNTY WERE FULLY AWARE OF WHAT WAS GOING ON AND IF THEY WERE NOT THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN. THE VOTERS OVER THERE NEED TO CLEAN HOUSE IMMEDIATELY AND REPLACE THEM ALL.

I don't know how to even address your crazy person philosophy. I am not a murderer or a gay priest and would totally pass a drug test. I just asked that if Marijuana is soooo horrible and there is so much proof of this , that you explain it to me. Raving in capslock really just makes you look crazy. Marijuana should be legal plain and simple. If it was legal there would be more room for real criminals in our prisons and then killers would not be warehoused in small town jails. The state would make lots of tax money and sick people who need medicine could have it. It is a good thing being a jerk isnt against the law or you would getalife sentence.

And once again our Governor solution--throw money at the problem!! How bout instead of continuing to spend so damn much money on the prisons, we do a few things logical, like maybe release the ones that do not pose a threat to our communities. Maybe save some money by putting many of them to work on chain gangs, perhaps take away some of their luxuries, how sad the prisoners live better in prison than some of our decent tax-paying citizens.
