Volunteer groups in the Wichita region are disbanding or struggling to survive because members are aging and young people aren't interested in joining.

For example, the Hypatia Club recently disbanded after serving the city since 1886. In its early years, the club advocated for women's rights. And the 12 members still left in the Haysville Lions Club are debating whether to disband.

Club members and others say younger members don't join because of time constraints and economic concerns. They also are able to find groups to join through social media and other means.

The Wichita Eagle reports not all civic organizations in Wichita are struggling.

Rotary Club of West Wichita has 65 members and many of them are younger. And the Downtown Lions Club is doing well.
