Ban prohibits any outdoor burning with no exceptions

Due to dry weather and vegetation conditions, the Ottawa County Commissioners have issued a burn ban for Ottawa County as of Wednesday June 27, 2012. All towns in Ottawa County utilize the county burn ban as also being a city burn ban, with the exception of Culver, which issues its own burn ban.

Dry pastures, fields, lawns etc. can burn very quickly and spread very fast. Be cautious about parking vehicles in dry grass or weeds. Catalytic converters’ very high temperature can ignite dry plant material quickly. Cigarettes tossed out of vehicles are also a great fire danger.

The burn ban prohibits any outdoor burning with, with no exemptions allowed. Burning of household trash or debris is prohibited while the burn ban is in effect.

Criminal prosecution for any person violating the burn ban may be implemented. Willful violation of the burn ban shall be considered a class “A” misdemeanor which is punishable by a fine of up $2,500.00 and one year in jail.

When Ottawa County receives adequate moisture and the conditions improve, the burn ban will be lifted. Until that time, be very conscious about the volatility of the dry grass and plants.

If we do not get any rain soon. I bet they will ban fireworks from being discharged if the grounds get any dryer.

I think as dry as it is Fireworks should be banned everywhere. Do people not have any common sense---I'd hate to lose my home or fields to fire - due to stupidity--if people used their heads they would not even think about fireworks, cigarettes and other hazardous fire starters as dry as it is.

As far as I know there is a burn ban with no exceptions also means no discharge of fireworks....I assume "no exceptions" means nothing. The county commission needs to let the public know if fireworks are going to be allowed or not before citizens go out and spend a bunch of money on fireworks and then not allow them to be shot off. As far as I'm concerned we can ban them forever like in hays...There are more productive ways to celebrate our nations birthday without all the noise and trash fireworks create anyway IMO.

The reason no ban is in place here is politically motivated. The good ole boys friend Tom Arpkle however you spell it, has at least one fireworks stand that we know of so these guys do not want to hurt his business at the expense of the rest of us.
