A man killed in a single vehicle crash in Junction City early Sunday is identified as a Fort Riley soldier.
The Army identifies the victim as 21-year-old Spc. Richard Sandoval. Sandoval was a Petroleum Supply Specialist.
The Geary County Sheriff's Department said deputies attempted to stop Sandoval at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday on suspicion of drunk driving. He fled, and about a minute later struck a tree and caught fire.
A deputy and a Junction City police officer tried unsuccessfully to get Sandoval out of the vehicle.
A native of Indio, Calif., Sandoval was assigned to Fort Riley in June 2011.
