Black Hawk Helicopter Unit To Deploy From Salina

An area Kansas National Guard aviation unit is set to deploy.
According to the National Guard, approximately 20 Kansas National Guardsmen will be honored in a deployment ceremony this Sunday in Salina. The ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. in Building 365, Kansas Regional Training Center, 2929 Scanlan Ave., Salina. The doors will open at 11:30 a.m.
The Black Hawk helicopter unit is deploying to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Their mission is to provide aeromedical evacuation support; rapid movement of patients, medical personnel and supplies and other support, as needed.
“Air support is a critical part of any military operation,” said Maj. Gen. (KS) Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general, “particularly medevac missions to airlift injured soldiers to get them help as soon as possible. The minutes saved by airlift can mean the difference between life and death.”
The unit will mobilize to Fort Hood, Texas, for additional training before going to Afghanistan to begin their one-year mission.
