Derailment Sparks Blaze

A train derailment west of Salina sparks a field fire on Sunday afternoon.
According to Saline County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Appel, about twenty-five Union Pacific train cars loaded with coal - derailed off a track near the intersection of Muir Road and Old 40-Highway.
The 109 car train, powered by three engines, was eastbound when the accident occurred around 2:30pm.
Members of Saline County Rural Fire District #3 responded to the scene and put out the fire which was burning in a wheat stubble field. About two acres were scorched.
There were no injuries.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, although the weather and extreme heat may have played a role in the incident.

We live approx 300' south of that same mainline in New Cambria. If one listens to the sound of the trains wheels rolling down the track they should be able to hear a different sound that when weather conditions are normal. Just this past couple of weeks the sound has changed. KInd of an eerie whining grinding sound.
