State Board of Education candidates can't escape questions about how Kansas public schools should teach evolution, even as they stress other issues in their campaigns.

Educators expect the board to consider new science standards next year.

Five of the board's 10 seats are on the ballot in this year's elections.

The August 7th primary will settle races for party nominations in two districts.

In the 6th District, Usha Reddi, a Manhattan teacher, and Carol Viar, a member of a Salina-area school board, are seeking the Democratic nomination.

The winner will face former state Representative Deena Horst, a Salina Republican.

In the 8th District in Wichita, Kathy Busch, a retired assistant superintendent, is trying to unseat incumbent Walt Chappell in the Republican primary, with no Democratic candidate on the ballot.

Seriously?? I don't give a flying flip if they teach evolution or how they teach evolution in the schools. My main focus is WHY I just had to pay $1000 for my 3 children to go to school!! According to my husband's and my income we can afford it, but of course they don't take into account house payment, car payments, all around bills, etc. I had to put that all on my credit card and I couldn't even pay for lunches this time around. THIS is "free public" education?? RIDICULOUS!!

Ha!! I'm prepared for the big bills for college! I expect that. Just astounded me when I enrolled them this morning. And then watching everyone else do the same thing. Of course AFTER I paid is when they told me they have a multi-child discount.

Little known FACT. Darwin renounced much of evolution before he died. One of the reasons you had to pay more is that Tom Arpke and others made the state's financial's look good at the expense of local governments including schools. Expect your property taxes to go up thanks to Tom and those who tell him how to vote.

I have been a registered Republican all my life, but voting for State School Board I have always voted a straight Democrat ticket. Why? Because our children are there to learn science, not religion. For crying out loud! I grew up in the 60's and 70's, and evolution was always taught. No one cared because we received our religious teaching at home and in our churches, where it belonged.

Let's look at this. We have administrators hauling in Hugh amounts for salaries especially in allthe smaller school districts. I could never understand why a school with 400 students pay a superintendant what superintendants of larger districts receive. Look at Salina get a copy of the wages being paid and for what positions you will be horrified. We do not need people who failed us when they were in Topeka we need people that will make sure our kids are getting a good education.

Both Salina and Lawrence have exactly 8 people making over $100,000 per year in their school districts and the Superintendent in Lawrence makes $7,000 less.

I will research this tonite but 8 people making over 100k is 7 to much. But I am sure there are many making 90k, 80k ect and alot of these people do no teaching to our kids.
