The central Kansas town of Russell is close to moving into its most stringent water conservation stage.

Russell is already in the third stage of its conservation plan, which involves restricting outside watering to one day a week.

City officials have also discussed the idea of building a pipeline from an area reservoir to wells closer to town. Early estimates suggest the pipeline could cost about $25 million.

Water levels in Russell's water wells along the Smoky Hill River are low, and the city's conservation plan, which is under review, calls for moving into the fourth stage when levels fall about another foot.

If Russell goes into the fourth stage, most of the water would be only for human consumption.

Ethanol comes at a huge price. Water for the corn and millions of gallons of water to make it. This has been talked about long before the drought. I wonder when they will get cut off from the water supplies.

We can't live without ethanol! Al Gore says we've got to have ethanol or the world will burn. Obama won't let them drill for oil in Alaska because it would bother the caribou, so now we have ethanol to save our lives. I bet the caribou have more water than we do. What happens when ethanol production comes to a halt? My God!...what will we blend into our gasoline? Stop and think for a minute....at stage 4 or 5 you can't flush your toilet anymore. Rest assured the caribou are doing fine in Alaska.
