A 65-pound catfish named Willie the Rivercat and several other fish in a 15,000-gallon aquarium at a Salina mall have died because of a high chloride level in the water.

Central Mall spokeswoman Maggie Phelps declined to say how many fish died, and she didn't know how the chloride level got so high.

Phelps says the mall was working with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism to make sure the same thing doesn't happen again.

She says the mall also will be getting new fish for the aquarium, including potentially another big catfish the public can help name.

Lights to the aquarium have been turned off and only seven fish and some turtles remained in the tank, which reopened in May after renovations.

Looks like mall personnel dropped the ball. No excuse for this to happen with the equipment and personnel they have.

Iamgonnagetu: You are right, someone was not paying attention to their job!! The work ethic with many people anymore is disturbing, some seem to not care about the job, get their check and go home. With the economy the way it is, and the shortage on jobs, I would think people would be paying closer attention to what they are doing so as to not lose the job that's paying their bills!!

Wonder if that lying POS game warden from the Kansas Department of Wildlife had the catfish and other fish euthanized because they were looking sick, like he did the little fawn that was at least being cared for and given a chance to live.

Maggie phelps was not doing her job evidently. Since she is in charge this becomes her responsibility.

I hope this does not come down to the care takers fault and gets fired for it. Im sure she feels awful and is going to make sure nothing like this happens again. Accidents happen and if anyone remembers this aquarium was just remodeled so maybe part of the water/chemical filtering system had a error.

It's a fish! With a little salt, pepper, some tartar sauce and a bag of Harold Ensleys fish batter old Willie will be just fine.

This isnt the first time they have died there. When they were remodeling it last year they died because the guy in charge of the aquarium forgot to plug in the damn filters and air pumps and they died. It was kept hush hush and the mall manager didn't think it was a big deal. The guy from the Milford fish hatchery helped them out by replacing the fish that died, so the big catfish that died more than likely is not the same fish that people used to see in there over a year ago.

@nutzboutitall..Glad you posted that comment. I had heard there was a boo-boo there last year that was kept hush hush. I called Milford and talked to some lady who told me she really could not comment and I would have to call back later to talk to someone. I agree, I don't think that is the original Willie. They probably made the switch out under the cover of darkness....

Stuff Willie and mount him outside the exhibit. Then stuff Phelps and send her on her way. She evidently cannot handle her job.
