A rural Saline County home is destroyed by a fire late Thursday afternoon.
Emergency responders were called at about 4:00 in the afternoon to the report of a house on fire near the corner of Cunningham and Campbell Roads. The house was fully engulfed when first responders arrived.
Saline County Sheriff Deputy Jerry Hammonds says that 69-year-old Cecil Butschle was home alone, cooking supper. Butschle heard a couple of "pops", and begin to look around. He went outside and discovered the back of the home engulfed in flames.
Butschle called for help. As a precaution, he was checked out by EMS at the scene.
While Butschle made it out okay, three pets inside did not. Hammonds says that two dogs and a cat that were inside could not be found, and presumably did not survive.
Friefighters responded from multiple districts, The fire spread to a nearby wooded area, but firefighters kept it from spreading to nearby homes.
