The U.S. Justice Department says the state women's prison in Kansas violates the civil rights of its inmates.
The U.S. Justice Department says the state women's prison in Kansas violates the civil rights of its inmates by failing to protect them from sexual misconduct and abuse by staff and other prisoners.
The department said in a letter Thursday to Gov. Sam Brownback that the problems have continued since it began investigating the Topeka Correctional Facility in April 2011.
The letter outlined steps the prison and the Kansas Department of Corrections can take to resolve the issues. Those steps include additional training and investigations of all complaints of misconduct.
But the letter also says that if the department isn't satisfied with the department's efforts by late October, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder could file a lawsuit.
Department of Corrections spokesman Jeremy Barclay says it is reviewing the letter.

It is more economical to follow the constitution and laws of the US than it is to please the DOJ and a federal district judge. Just look at California. The federal judges out there have forced the state to release 40,000 inmates back onto the street and spend billions of dollars building a state of the art medical system for inmates. I hope Governor Brownback does not try to play hardball with the feds on this one or we will be spending billions ofKansas tax dollars building state of the art prion facilities under the supervision of the federal courts. Governor, please crack the whip and make KDC get its act together.

Ok todd this person is thumbing their nose at you and making comments about me looking for a reaction. Do something about it as I will not let it continue you gave a warning which has done no good.
