A Bennington man is hurt in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 27-year-old Tyler Smith was driving a pickup truck east on K 18 Highway. For an unknown reason he crossed the center line, and crossed the west bound lanes. The truck then entered the north ditch, went down an embankment into a creek, and hit a concrete bridge.

Smith, who was not buckled up, was hurt. He was transported to a Wichita hospital.

The crash happened just after 7:00 Wednesday morning, about 10 miles east of Bennington on K 18 Highway.

While it could have been something mechanical chances are a cell phone also could have contributed. Instead of reporting seat belts the patrol should be reporting possible cell phone usage or texting.

That whole road is deer and turkey alley. And what might have happened if the truck caught on fire while he was buckled in? Seat belts are not a guarantee of safety and should be a matter of personal preference rather than nanny-state tyranny.
