Students at a Salina elementary school were joined by some special guests this week for their morning "marathon" workout, members of the Salina South Cross Country Team.

Team members walked, and ran with students as they completed their daily laps before school.

USD 305 Public Information Coordinator Jennifer Bradford-Vernon tells KSAL News that all of the elemtary schools in Salina are participating in the "marathon" program this fall. Students walk or run laps around a designated course, and log their progress. By the time the program ends many of the students will have walked or ran the equivalent of a marathon, a little over 26 miles.

Bradford-Vernon says that the marathons are fun activities with a focus on health, well being and physical fitness.

The schools encourage participation from the community. Parents, siblings, and other family members and friends join the students and walk with them.

The Salina Community Foundation is helping to fund the elementary school "marathon" events. School Marathon Grants were non-competitive and offered to all Salina elementary schools as part of the Greater Salina Community Foundation's Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative.

When all schools have completed the marathons, students who have completed the full marathon will be invited to participate in a larger community celebration.
