J.R. Claeys calls it a "recycled, politically-motivated attack".

J.R. Claeys calls it a "recycled, politically-motivated attack".

A Salina Republican candidate responds to an attack by the Democrat who is running against him.

On Friday, Democrat Gary Swartzendruber at a media conference brought fraud allegations against a Washington DC business that Republican J.R. Claeys owned in 2009 and 2010.

Claeys sent a response to KSAL News, saying that it is inappropriate discourse on a day in which a police officer was shot.

"To play political games on a day a Salina Police Officer was shot in the line of duty shows where my opponent's priorities are. I pray for the officer, his family, and all our first responders who stand between us and the bad guys every day. We should be spending our time today honoring our brave police officers who put themselves in harms way to keep us safe."

Claeys also says "this is nothing more than a recycled, politically-motivated attack by a guy desperate to steer the conversation away from his support for Obamacare and taxpayer funded abortions. Sell that door-to-door in my district and see where it gets you."

Comments must stay on topic and be respectful. Comments that are personal attacks, make unfounded accusations, or are for the purpose of "trolling" or inciting others will be removed. Offending users will have their profile suspended.

I wouldn't believe anything a Democrat said.

Although I do not live in Mr. Claeys’ district (thank God), he is the type of candidate that really has me wondering about the Republican Party, the conservative wing in particular. Bernie Madoff could win in the 69th District as long as he says he is against Obamacare and abortions.

This article stinks of politics on both sides; one is accusing the other of fraud; the other uses a police officer's injury as a shield to distract... Why would anyone want to be a politician? Ugh.

Shame on Mr. Claeys for acting like a Democrat. Shame on him for using the shooting of a SPD Officer in this manner. Man up Mr Claeys! Do not act like this! Get everything out in the open right now! I expect a Democrat to use these tactics but not a Republican. Every minute we have to wait for the WHOLE story is a minute too long. Once the ENTIRE story is out, then you can move ahead and discuss the issues. If you allow the story to linger, it will sink your ship.

I am surprised that I find myself in agreement with troy on this issue. How inappropriate to use the shooting of our police officer for political purposes. I think Claeys has already sunk his own ship, but hsi only hope is to come forward with the TRUTH, WHOLE TRUTH, AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH SO HELP HIM GOD. Quit running from your past, or, if you did defraud others, then quit the race and don't drag the Republican party through the mud.

FTC Settlement Ends "Tested Green" Certifications That Were Neither Tested Nor Green Company Allegedly Charged Up To $549.95 for Worthless Environmental Labels The Federal Trade Commission reached an agreement that will put an end to the deceptive tactics of a company that allegedly sold worthless environmental certifications for hundreds of dollars, and falsely told more than 100 customers that its certifications were endorsed by two independent firms – which it actually owned. The FTC settlement bars Tested Green and its owner Jeremy Ryan Claeys from making misrepresentations when selling any product.

If this is true, then this is a despicable act on the part of Mr. Claeys. He does not in any way, shape or form, have any reason to expect us to afford him the opportunity to represent us in government.

It is unfortunate that dishonest people are attracted to politics. I wonder why the Republican party is not more interested in fielding a better candidate for this fairly vulnerable seat.

I read about the charge that came down from the FTC several months ago (you can google it for more info) and it was a case of out-and-fraud. The company was selling worthless pieces of paper. Mr. Clays sure didn't address this in his response - just diverted attention. I, for one, decided he wouldn't get my vote back when this first came out.

What about Tom Arpke another one that got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Do we no longer have values that candidates need to meet?

the republican party is deep in the mud with the likes of these guys and the democrat that brought this up. What we need is the immergence of some honest parties with god fearing people.

Huelskamp did the same thing in response to using taxpayer funds for his glossy political mailer to his constituents. He even directed our attention to a Kansas budget link that does not exist. Hypocrites.
