Injured Officer Recovering, Bullet Hit Right Eye
Dave Foor - Mon 10:44 AM 10/01/2012
Officer Chuck Huen was shot in the face early Friday morning while responding to a call regarding a stolen car, and a man armed with a handgun.
Salina Police have released additional information on the six hour standoff and shootout early Friday morning in which Officer Chuck Huen was shot in the face.
Deputy Police Chief Carson Mansfield says Office Huen was shot in the right eye with the bullet exiting through his right ear. He has lost the sight in that eye but appears to have no other serious injuries. He came home Saturday but is returning to the Oklahoma City hospital where he was taken Friday for additional tests before more surgery is done.
Mansfield said officers had responded to a report of a possible stolen car and-or domestic incident late Thursday night at 308 North 13th. When they entered the home gunfire was exchanged with 19-year old Marijon Gadson who was in the basement. Officer Huen and other officers had entered the kitchen when he was hit by a shot fired through the basement door or a wall.
A SWAT team was called in and tear gas fired into the home. Gadson was found dead in the basement, Mansfield says officers are almost sure they did not shoot Gadson and it is believed he committed suicide.
The KBI is continuing its investigation.

I figured it was more of a problem that "tripped over a rock" that someone wrote on a previous thread about this news story. Sad for everyone involved.

Yes, someone wrote that it was not a very serious injury in an earlier post, but was obviously wrong. Officer Huen is a strong person with a big heart and great friends and family and he will overcome this temporary setback.

Glad the officer is out of the hospital and doing ok. But one question needs to be addressed that being why were the regular officers sent into the house when those leaving the house told those in charge that the individual was in the basement with a gun. When that person did not respond the swat squad should have been summoned. These officers are trained and have the equipment for this type of situation. The chief or the officers supervisor that sent these officers into the house instead need to be held accountable for what happened to this officer. Hopefully whoever is doing the follow up investigation will question the actions taken on that night.

You are right Life, but unfortunately there will be no follow up investigation. The suspect is dead and the Police consider it Case Closed, if there is an investigation it will be half ass like our Police Department.

Viper, if you read the previous articles, the KBI is investigating the crime scene. It should be fair.

The SPD gets a bad wrap too much of the time. It's the little things that are adding up. Saying there's no crime when it's all around us for instance. A DUI stop consists of 5-7 patrol cars, the van, a dog, and possibly an ambulance if one is available. But do you think they could put an effort forward to curb the boom, boom, ba boom stereos. It's the little things. Patrol cars sitting in a dark parking lot with their lights off waiting for someone speeding as one boom boom stereo after another drives by. You pick the offense that irritates you and I am sure not enough is being done. But have a cold one before you leave the bar and they will be on you like stink on a skunk. The protect and serve the people, just not all of us. Would love to have a community forum with the police chief to gripe a little.....and praise them a little also.

to many times these officers are complained about because they enforce the law. If u went to ur jobs and didn't do what u were supposed to u wouldn't have a job. its the same for them. This officer not only lost his eye but will probably not be able to continue to do what he loves doing ! protecting the community that usually gives him no thanks. thank you officer huen for your sacrifice and service !!!it will not be forgotten.

getalife674 part of ur comments are right there is a team that would usually repond to this sort of thing. most of them are patrol officers also. a department salina's size cant front a full time swat team so they train some other people a little more and give them swat type equipment. still the same guys, they just go throw on some camo's and a helmet and have time to make out a little better plan while the guy sits in the basement with the place surrounded. basically what would have happened different would they would have gased him out, they wouldn't have been going in the basement to get him

I feel the person in charge made the mistake of sending those officers in with the situation the way it was. People are always saying I am against the police force which is not true. I am against the poor leadership of the department and that poor leadership has cost this poor officer an eye and could have been his life.

It's better to lose an eye than to lose the motor function of your brain. Thank you, officer Huen for serving our community. I wish you the best and have bright future.

@Iam, though Officer Huen was shot and flown to the trauma center in Oklahoma City, you said that his injury "must no be that serious." When Chief Hill announced that crime was down by more than 1/3 over the past 9 years, you said he was lying and that crime was actually up, but then admitted you don't have any records to support your claim. You don't live in Salina or have any law enforcement training or experience. What is your beef with Chief hill and Sheriff Kockanowski?

Don't put your words down for what you hoped I said. You and your other Id gasspasser are quite an act on here. What I said was chief Hill was covering his butt. Crime is not down as he says but is rampant. What he has done is break down catagories to meet his needs. Further his department has refused in certain instances to take reports. Now he dropped the ball in how he handled this matter and a officer was almost killed. What's it going to take for people like you to pull your head out of the sand and see how bad he is doing his job.

Wow reading the salina journal today I was amazed to read the police have now changed the story of what occurred and was reported several days ago also in the salina journal. What makes this worst is the officer making these comments. Deputy Chief Mansfield I have always felt was the man to be chief. He has always shown to be a fair, honest and educated man. Now that he is reporting a totally different version of what took place evidently the department trying to cover up mistakes that were made. I do understand a job is a job and if you were instructed by your chief to come out with this second story you were following orders. But it has made you lose some respect many. of us previously held for you.

Sad that a good honest deputy chief is put into this position. But the chief is good at tossing his people under the bus plus covering his butt and must think we the taxpayers are as stupid as the city manager and commissioners who accept his stories. This time the news got reported and if some did not pick up on his trying to twist around what happened he would have got by with it.
