KSAL Staff - Mon 09:09 PM 10/08/2012
Salina area legislative candidates answered questions on life issues Monday evening. Over 30 people attended a canddiate forum hosted by the Salinans for Life organization.
All of the Salina area legislative candidates including Kansas House of Representative candidates Democrat Gary Swartzendruber and Republican J.R. Claeys in the 69th District, Democrat Alan Jilka and Republican Diana Dierks in the 71st District, Republican Steven Johnson who is running unopposed in the 108th District, and in the race for the 24th Senate District Senate Democrat Janice Norlin and Republican Tom Arpke.
Also, Ashley Myers of Salina attended on behalf of 1st Congressional District U.S. Congressman Tim Huelskamp, who is running unopposed. Myers read a statement by the congressman affirming his support of life issues, but did not answer questions on his behalf.
After making an opening statement, each of the candidates were asked three questions by the organization.
When asked when life begins, all said at conception with the exception of Norlin who said at birth.
Each candidate was handed a copy of their respective party's platform which was passed this summer at each respective convention as they deal with life issues. They were asked if they are in complete support of that platform. All said that they were, with the exception of Jilka. Jilka said that he does not support several areas of the Democrat platform, including abortion which he opposes.
The final question was in regard to the death penalty in Kansas. All of the candidates support it, with the exception of Jilka, Norlin, and Johnson who said that they would support repealing it.
Following the questions by Salinans For Life, the public asked questions as well.
Every local candidate running in a contested race will appear ina forum on KSAL's Friendly Fire Program over the next several week. All of the programs will be recorded, and archived on this website.

Figures Jilka, Norlin and Johnson would be against the dead penalty. But all three are on the bottom with little support.
