The new X-Ray Machine was unveiled at a Red Ribbon Cutting at Salina Tech on Tuesday.

New technology is unveiled at Salina Area Technical College.

The Dental Program at Salina Area Technical College took another step forward - with a leap into the digital age.

Through a grant from the Delta Dental Foundation, a new digital X-ray machine and amenities needed to replace an aging unit was unveiled at a ribbon cutting on Tuesday.

Executive Director of the Delta Dental Kansas Foundation, Karen Finstad, tells KSAL News that the upgrade is cutting edge, "We are very pleased to help this program press ahead," she said.

Salina Tech's Dental Assistant, Lezlie McKinney says the big news with digital - is making things smaller.

"It's definitely more confortable and safer for patients and quicker for us."

Digital X-rays are made by placing a thin sensor about the size of a matchbook in your mouth. The pictures are then sent to a screen on-site, or around the world.

The new digital X-ray machine replaces an antiquated tool that students have been using in labs since the 1970's. The technology jump not only cuts radiation exposure to patients but cuts costs by eliminating film.

The 9-month long Dental Program at Salina Area Technical College is currrently filled with 19 students.

According to President Greg Goode, placement rate after program completion is at 88-to-100-percent.
