A central Kansas food bank's campaign to add space to serve more clients is $50,000 closer to its goal.
The McPherson Sentinel reports an anonymous donor contributed that amount this week to the McPherson County Food Bank's fundraising effort.
Officials are trying to raise $200,000 to add onto the building on Business U.S. 81 in McPherson. The $50,000 gift brings the amount raised so far to $160,000.
The food bank needs more room for storage and for the growing numbers of people who stop by on distribution days. Officials say the number of families served rose by 31 percent from 2010 to 2011, and continues to rise this year.

At least they are not spending money like this for art but for some worth while need. Salina commissioners should be taking notes on how to do best for the people that elected them. Spending good money on art junk, river studies and needless ordinances for lifestyles is not what taxpayers want.

First of all, thanks to the donor who gave the money for the new building! Trying to keep our neighbors fed is a worthwhile goal. Note that river studies, public art, street projects, etc. is that they are on public property and are for the good of all. Funding a food bank is a good idea and good for the community, but may not fit the role of government. This is one of those areas where private contributions should be used. In addition, I would imagine that if it came down to it, all the less-government types wouldn't want to spend large sums of tax money to fund the local food bank. Am I right?

Nope you are dead wtong. A few in the city that ant things like the river project or $300k art are selfish especially when so many people in this town have to use this service. Sounds to me you need to walk a mile in there shoes. Your wonderful life can crash tomorrow and you could need to use the food bank probably then you would look at this issue differently.

But, iamgonnagetyou, because you have a jaded and negative view on nearly everything so it is easy to dismiss your glass half empty approach to everything...even when you may be correct. If you were positive more often, then people would take you seriously when you happen to be negative.

Thanks, Logical. I agree that anybody could need the services of the food bank at any time. So, should we not have any parks, recreation programs, activities for kids, libraries, or any of the other "amenities" provided by tax dollars and put that money towards the food banks? Maybe, maybe not, or somewhere in between? I'm actually kind of agreeing with you by saying that some things that benefit everybody who is in the town should be paid for by taxes and those things that directly affect certain people might be better paid for from private contributions.

Logical if thats the id your using today if what I comment offends you then you evidently don't believe in the truth and when someone tells it like it is you just cannot handle it. In this case people are layed off cannot find work and need assistance. The economy is in the toilet and the commissioners need not be spending money for unneeded things as explained in my previous post. If you and your other names cannot understand that then so be it.

As said many times before, the want's of a few should not out weigh the needs of many. Food banks and a lot of other low income needs for those that truly need help should be a top priority. I have no idea how much the recent 'art' added in Salina cost taxpayers, but the bottom line needs to be, spend our tax money wisely on the needs of the many and let private donations cover the wants of a few.

Well said GetAGrip to bad tgsalina and Logical are not in tune with what should be done but since it is only one person using 2 names to try and support his stance I can see the source of those comments as being meaningless. In our community the welfare of its people should come first. I do not think $300,000 should ever be spent for a piece of art without voter approval. But when people lie and mislead others just to become a city commissioner like Aaron, Kaye and Barb have done all with skeltons in their closets it shows they have no morals or concern for others in our community.

OK, so is $300,000 the right amount for the city to give to the food bank this year?? I'm ok with that. So exactly who will get the food that amount will buy. Then, how much should we spend to house the now-homeless health department? Are we willing to spend a million a year on that to cover people who don't have insurance? My point is: Where does it stop and are you eiklling to have tax money (and possibly higher taxes) spent on what you consider worthwhile expenditures? I'm not saying I'm against those things, but "be careful what you ask for."
