Knights Split Again at Chapman Tourney

The Sacred Heart Knights boys and girls basketball teams split a doubleheader for the second time this week at the Irish Classic tournament in Chapman.

In the girls game, Rossville began on a 5-0 run to take an early lead. Sacred Heart answered with a 9-0 run of their own and lead by four points after the opening quarter. After the Lady Bulldogs made the score 9-7 early in the second quarter, the Lady Knights scored the next four points to take their biggest lead at 13-7. Rossville came back to make the score 13-11, but a late free throw made the score 14-11 in favor of Sacred Heart at halftime.

Both teams were held scoreless early in the third quarter until a Rossville free throw made the score 14-12 with 5:33 remaining. The Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 16-16, but the Lady Knights regained the lead at 19-16 going into the final quarter. Rossville was within two points twice, with the score 22-20 and 24-22, but two Tracie Thibault free throws with 10.9 seconds left in the game, secured the 26-22 win.

Sacred Heart improves to 3-0 and was lead in scoring by Cara Donley with nine points and Megan Gilliland's seven.

In the boys game, the Knights scored the first basket and led for a majority of the game. Sacred Heart led by as many as five points early, but the advantage was cut to 17-16 after the first quarter. Rossville trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter, but kept the game close with a 34-32 halftime score.

In the third quarter, after several chances, the Bulldogs finally tied the game 45-45. The Knights immediately went on a 6-0 run to regain the lead and make the score 51-45 going into the final quarter of the game. Rossville answered back with a 12-0 run of their own and held Sacred Heart scoreless for over half of the final period. With the score now 57-51 in favor of the Bulldogs, the Knights attempted a late comeback, getting with two points at 59-57 and 61-59. In the end, Rossville converted their free throws and held on for a 63-61 win.

The Knights fall to 1-2 and were led in scoring by Tate Richards with 23 points.

Sacred Heart will take on Chapman in the final games of the Irish Classic tournament on Saturday. Tipoff for the girls is set for 5:30 and the boys will follow at 7:15. Both games will air on Sportsradio 1150 KSAL-AM.
