South Girls Win in OT, Shorthanded Boys Lose

The Salina South girls picked up a 57-51 overtime win over the Derby Panthers.
After a slow start for Salina South allowed Derby to take a 6-0 lead, the Cougars closed the quarter on a 5-0 spurt to pull within one at 6-5.
The Cougars would use the momentum to outscore the Panthers 14-6 in the second quarter and take a 19-12 halftime lead.
The third quarter belonged to Derby. The Panthers used an 11-0 run to open the quarter and went up 23-19. South would fight back, but Derby would extend the lead again and led at the end of three, 30-24.
The Cougars would answer in the fourth, outscoring the Panthers 17-11 down the stretch. However, Alyxis Bowen hit a shot in the post to tie the game for Derby and send it to overtime, tied at 41.
In the extra fram, Salina South took over and built a lead. Megan Holloway hit her free throws down the stretch as the Cougars held on for the win.
Holloway set a new career high with 32 points. Emily Webb set a new career high with 10 points.
The Cougars are 4-1 overall and 2-1 in AVCTL Division I. The Cougars are off until January 3rd when they host Maize.
The Salina South boys played shorthanded and lost to a strong Derby squad, 72-43.
The Cougars were without a good portion of their regular varsity roster due to discipline, and the state-ranked Panthers exploited the weakness, building a 21-9 lead after one and extended the lead to 43-25 at halftime.
The Cougars played many young players in the game, including freshmen Jacob Marcotte and Trace Kochevar.
Conner Ryan set a new season-high in points, going for 17. Shawn Smith poured in a career-high 12 points.
The Cougars are 1-4 overall and 1-2 in AVCTL Division I. The Cougars are off until January 3rd when they host Maize.
