Salina South Splits with Wichita East

The Salina South girls picked up a 47-37 win over Wichita East in the first game of the day at Charles Koch Arena in the AVCTL/City League Challenge.
The Blue Aces used a 14-0 run into the second quarter to build a 19-7 lead over South. However, the Cougars chipped away at the lead, and trailed 21-14 at the half.
In the second half, the Cougars continued to use their spurt from the end of the first half. South scored the first nine points of the third quarter, completing a 16-2 run to take a 23-21 lead. South would slowly pull away in the fourth quarter for the win.
The Cougars were hampered by turnovers and poor free throw shooting in the win.
Janai Mitchell led the Cougars with 15 points.
Salina South is now 5-2 overall. They return to AVCTL play on Tuesday, traveling to Campus.
The Salina South boys hung tough early, but Wichita East pulled away from the Cougars in the second quarter and second half in a 87-47 win.
The Cougars fell behind 8-4 early, but scored five straight, including a three by Justin Stonebraker, to take a 9-8 lead.
However, the Blue Aces answered with a 10-0 run, taking an 18-9 lead and led 21-12 after one.
The Cougars would close within four at 23-19 on another Stonebraker three, but the Blue Aces then scored 16 of the final 21 points of the half to lead 39-24 at the break.
South would score the first four points of the third quarter, but East answered with an 11-0 run and led 64-36 after three.
East would continue to pull away in the fourth, coasting to an 87-47 win.
Justin Stonebraker led the Cougars with 12 points, while Ryan Fox added 11.
The Cougars are 1-6 and play at Campus on Tuesday.
