Mustang Boys Win, Girls Fall Short in Fourth

The Salina Central Mustangs played a pair of tough games in Maize, but only the boys come away with a win.
In the boys game, the Mustangs used a 13-0 run to open the game, and never trailed in a 54-46 win.
However, that doesn't mean the Eagles made it easy.
Maize would score the next eight points to close to within five early in the second quarter.
Central would rebuild the lead back to 11 before Maize would again cut it to five, but could get no closer in the first half. The Mustangs led 28-20 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Maize used two 6-0 spurts to bring the game within a possession at 35-32 at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth, Maize would cut the lead to one at 42-41, and had a chance to take a lead, but failed to do so. The Mustangs scored the next five points on a three by Max Kuhn and two free throws from Rashun Allen to go up 47-41. Maize would get no closer than three the rest of the way.
Treyton Hines matched a career-high with 21 points, while Max Kuhn added 11 points and Justin Bengtson 10.
The Mustangs have won five straight and are 5-3 and 4-1 in AVCTL Division I. Central plays at Derby on Friday.
The girls game was a defensive battle throughout, but Maize broke through in the fourth quarter for a 43-32 win over Salina Central.
The Mustangs took the early lead, and led for much of the first quarter before Maize went ahead on the final bucket of the first quarter and led 8-7 after one.
Central regained the lead to start the second quarter, thanks to a 7-0 run. The Mustangs would lead until the 3:50 mark when Maize tied the game and subsequently took the lead. The Eagles used a 10-0 run to surge in front and led 18-17 at halftime.
The Mustangs would rally to tie the game three different times in the third quarter, including at the end of the quarter on a bucket by Shaelyn Martin. The game was tied at 26 going to the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, Maize scored 10 of the first 12 points to take an eight point lead at 36-28 with 3:34 to play, and the Mustangs couldn't draw closer than five the rest of the way.
Martin was the only Mustang in double figures with 12 points.
Salina Central drops to 5-3 and 3-2 in AVCTL Division I. The Mustangs are at Derby on Friday.
