Second Half Key in Girls' Win, Boys' Loss for South

In the girls game, Salina South rolled to a 52-27 win.

The Cougars and Salthawks went back and forth in the first quarter, and South led 10-8 after one.

The Cougars opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run and led 17-8. Hutch would score eight straight to pull within one at 17-16, before South scored 10 of the final 12 points of the half to lead 27-19 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars limited Hutch to eight third quarter points and none in the fourth quarter. South used an 11-0 third quarter run to blow the game open, and cruised to the win.

Megan Holloway led the way with 19 points, while Emilee Holloway added 11 and Janai Mitchell had 10.

The Cougars are 7-2 overall and 4-2 in AVCTL Division I. They host Sacred Heart in the first round of the Salina Invitational Tournament on Monday.

In the boys game, Hutchinson pulled away late for a 58-42 win.

The Cougars and Salthawks played a tight game for 20 minutes, as neither team opened up more than a five point lead early. Hutch led 17-12 early in the second quarter, but South erased the deficit and led 26-24 at halftime.

In the second half, turnovers piled up for South as the Cougars saw the game slip away. South tied the game at 32 with 4:11 to go in the third quarter, but Hutch responded with a 7-0 run. The Cougars got within three at 39-36 early in the fourth, but Hutch pulled away and led by as much as 17 for the win.

Conner Ryan led the team with nine points.

The Cougars are 2-7 overall and 2-4 in AVCTL Division I. They host Abilene in the first round of the SIT on Tuesday.
