Sacred Heart Takes Two From Ellsworth

Sacred Heart built some momentum heading into next week's Salina Invitational Tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Ellsworth at home Friday night.
The girls went back and forth until Sacred Heart pulled away and held on for a 45-40 win.
The Lady Knights took an early lead, but an 11-2 Ellsworth run put the Lady Bearcats up 13-7 after the opening quarter. Sacred Heart trailed by seven points twice in the second quarter, but ended on a 5-0 run of their own to close the gap to 21-19 at halftime.
The Sacred Heart run continued as they also scored the first four points of the second half to regain the lead at 23-21. With the score later tied 27-27, Ellsworth went on another run and led 32-28 going into the final quarter. The Lady Bearcats scored the next basket to go up by six points, but the Lady Knights ended the game from that point on with a 17-6 run to comeback for the five point win.
Sacred heart improves to 5-4 and 1-4 in the NCAA league. The Lady Knights were led in scoring by Cara Donley with 14 points and a total of eight Sacred Heart players scored in the game.
Sacred Heart plays next in the S.I.T. against Salina South at 7:30 Monday night.
In the boys game, the score was tied twice early, but the Knights went on for a huge 60-25 win.
With the score tied 6-6, Sacred Heart ended the first quarter on an 11-4 run to lead 17-10. The Knights blew the game open by scoring the first 14 points of the second quarter and holding Ellsworth to four second quarter points. Sacred Heart led 33-14 at halftime.
The Bearcats could only muster 11 additional points in the second half as the Knights led 47-20 after three quarters and went on to win by 35 points.
Sacred Heart is now 6-3 and 4-1 in the NCAA league. Tate Richards scored 15 points for the Knights and Daniel O'Brien added 14 off the bench, including four three-point baskets. A total of ten Sacred Heart players scored in the game.
The Knights will play again next Tuesday night against Salina Central in the opening round of the S.I.T. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.
