Mustangs Spoil Derby's Winter Homecoming

Salina Central spoiled Derby's winter homecoming with a sweep on Friday night.

In the girls game, the Mustangs and Derby battled in a game of runs before Central pulled out the 51-42 win.

The Mustangs led 5-0 early, but Derby outscored the Mustangs 9-5 the rest of the quarter. Central led 10-9 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs outscored Derby 18-12 to build a 28-21 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Derby closed the gap, pulling within three before Salina Central expanded the lead back to 10 at the end of the quarter, and hold on for the win.

Emily Wood leads the way with 15 points, while Shaelyn Martin adds a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mustangs are 6-3 overall and 4-2 in AVCTL Division I. Salina Central hosts Clay Center in a first round Salina Invitational Tournament game on Monday.

In the boys game, Salina Central handed state-ranked Derby its second straight loss, 54-48.

The Panthers took the early 14-6 lead, but the Mustangs closed the final 4:45 of the first quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 14.

In the second quarter, Salina Central used a 13-2 run to close the first half to take a 28-23 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Derby would close to within seven before the Mustangs mounted an 11-4 run to go up 43-31 after the third.

Derby would get within three down the stretch, but the Mustangs sealed the win with free throws.

Treyton Hines led the way with 17 points while Mark Vaughn added 14.

The Mustangs have won six straight and are 6-3 overall, 5-1 in AVCTL Division I. The Mustangs host Sacred Heart in the first round of the SIT on Tuesday night.
