The Salina South Cougars never led until the fourth quarter, then had to fight off Hays down the stretch in a 40-38 overtime win.
Hays scored the first seven points and led 11-3 after a quarter. South would get within two in the second quarter, but Hays rebuilt the lead to 7 at halftime, 20-13.
Hays would hold on to a five point lead, 23-18, after 3.
In the fourth, South used a 9-0 run to take its first lead at 25-23 with 4:19 to go on a bucket by Emily Webb.
The two would trade leads until Hays led by two in the final seconds. Megan Holloway missed a shot in the lane, then McKenzie Haynes' three on the rebound was deflected. Cassidy Cook tipped the shot in the lane and had it go in to tie the game and force overtime.
In overtime, Holloway hit a three to give South a 38-37 lead with 25 seconds left. Hays tied it on a free throw on the next possession, but Holloway answered back with a pull up jumper in the lane as South held on for the 40-38 win.
Cassidy Cook scored a career-high 18 points and pulled in a career-high 14 rebounds for her first double-double.
The Cougars are 11-2 overall and host Valley Center on Friday.
The Salina South Cougar boys led for much of the first half, but trailed for the final 13:26 of the game in a 54-48 loss to Hays.
The Cougars built an 11-6 lead after 1, and stretched it to as much as 7 at 23-16. Hays scored nine straight points to take the lead, but South tied it at halftime at 25.
South took a brief 27-25 lead in the third quarter, but Hays scored seven straight to go in front for good.
The Cougars would close within two three different times, but could never get any closer.
Justin Stonebraker led South with 18 points.
The Cougars are 4-9 overall and host Valley Center on Friday.
