KWU Swept at Friends

Friends answered every challenge by Kansas Wesleyan and pulled away down the stretch in a 76-57 win in the women's game at the Garvey Center in Wichita.

The first half started slowly, as Friends led 7-5 with 11:18 to go in the half. The Falcons would go on an 8-0 run to build a 15-5 lead. KWU would get no closer than five in the remainder of the half and trailed by as much 13 before trailing 35-24 at the break.

In the second half, Friends would claim a 45-28 lead with 17:55 left before the Coyotes would close to within 10 on a three by Alecia Smith with 13:29 to go.

Friends responded with a 7-0 run, and would lead by no fewer than 14 the rest of the way.

Alecia Smith posted her seventh double double for KWU with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Stephanie Frost had 13 points.

The Coyotes are 13-10, 8-5 in the KCAC. Friends is 17-7, 11-2 in the league.

After hanging tough in the first half, a 21-0 Friends run sends the Falcons to an 82-59 win over Kansas Wesleyan in the men's game.

In a back-and forth first half, the Coyotes were forced to play the final 13:50 without KCAC leading scorer Canon Fields, who picked up three quick fouls. The lead changed hands 11 times before Friends scored 8 of the final 10 points to take a 30-25 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Coyotes closed within three at 37-34 when Friends went on a 21-0 run to pull away. The Coyotes went scoreless for 6:29 in the stretch and without a field goal for 8:05.

KWU could only get as close as 13 before Friends pulled away again.

Michael Johnson led the Coyotes with 12 points, while Canon Fields and Brock Borovetz added 11 each.

Friends is 12-11 overall and 9-4 in the KCAC, while KWU drops to 6-17 and 3-10.

Both Coyote squads host Bethel on Saturday. Pregame is at 4:50 with tipoff at 5 on Classic Hits 104.9.
