Mustangs Split with Newton

The Salina Central girls opened their second trip through Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I with a loss on their home floor to Newton, 43-31.

The two teams traded five point spurts in the first quarter, with Central leading 10-5 after one.

In the second quarter, Newton scored eight of the first 10 points and held on for a 20-18 halftime lead.

In the second half, Newton pushed out to a 31-27 lead after three, and started to pull away in the fourth, hitting free throws down the stretch for the win.

Emily Hiebert led Newton with 13 points to lead Newton. Shaelyn Martin had 10 for Central.

The Mustangs are 9-5 and travel to Hays on Tuesday.

Salina Central hit a big shot late and held off Newton's last second attempt in a 43-42 win.

The Mustangs led 9-6 after one, but Newton used a strong second quarter to take a 21- 20 lead at halftime.

Newton held on to the 33-32 after three, but Central made key plays down the stretch. Max Kuhn hit a three to give Central the 43-42 lead with just a few seconds remaining. Gunnar Drinnen missed a shot in the lane for Newton, giving Central the 43-42 win.

Mark Vaughn recorded his first double-double of the season, going for 12 points and 12 rebounds. Jack Kingsley led Newton with eight points.

The Mustangs are 9-5 and travel to Hays on Tuesday.
