Salina Central Gallops Past Hays

Salina Central withstood several Hays charges, but held on for a 45-40 win in Hays in the boys game.
Hays scored the first five points, but Central answered with back-to-back threes from Damien Cooper and Mark Vaughn gave Central a 6-5 lead. Hays scored the final bucket of the quarter and took a 7-6 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Hays pushed out to a 13-8 lead before Central used a 9-0 run to take the lead, going in front on a three by Max Kuhn. Hays hit a lay-up to close the half, cutting Central's lead to 19-18.
Central pushed the lead to 6 at 26-20, but Hays would challenge, cutting the lead to 1 before holding on to a 32-30 lead after three.
In the fourth, Hays took a 35-34 lead on a three by Kade Parker, but Central answered with six straight points to take a 39-35 lead. Hays closed within one at 41-40, before Central held Hays scoreless for the final 2:45 for the win.
Mark Vaughn had 13 points while Treyton Hines added 10.
The Mustangs are 10-5 and host Derby on Friday.
Emily Wood scored a seasom-high 17 points, MacKenzie Morris chipped in a career-high 14, and the outcome was never in doubt as Salina Central routed Hays in the girls game, 69-36, in Hays.
In the first quarter, the Mustangs scored the first 12 points in building a 19-8 lead.
Central then scored the first 10 points of the second quarter, outscoring the Indians 22-9 in the frame. The Mustangs led by as much as 28, and led 41-17 at halftime.
In the second half, the Mustangs continued to pull away. Central led 58-28 after three and led by as much as 37 before winning 69-36.
Hailey Mayfield and Shaelyn Martin each scored 10 points for the Mustangs.
Central is 10-5 while Hays drops to 6-9. Central hosts Derby on Friday.
