Salina South Splits with Newton

A big fourth quarter helped Newton turn back Salina South 39-26 in the girls game in Newton.

The Railers scored the first seven points of the game and led 7-3 after a quarter.

Newton would lead by double digits with just under two minutes to go in the half, and led 17-8 at halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars outscored Newton 10-5 in the third quarter and trailed 22-18 after three.

In the fourth quarter, Newton used a 7-0 run to open the quarter and never looked back in the 39-26 win.

Megan Holloway had nine points for Salina South.

The Cougars are 12-3 and host Hutchinson on Friday.

A strong second half sent the Salina South boys to a 62-52 win over Newton and a season sweep of the Railers.

The Cougars opened the game on a 14-3 run, but Newton scored nine of the next 11 to make it 16-12 after a quarter.

Newton used a 10-3 run before halftime to grab a 30-24 halftime lead.

In the second half, South uses a 12-2 run to take a 44-40 lead after three.

In the fourth quarter, South hit its free throws to pull away for the win.

Justin Stonebraker had 18 points. Zach Nachbar had career-highs of nine points and 13 rebounds.

The Cougars are 6-9 and host Hutchinson on Friday.
