Friday Hoops Preview: Central, South Host AVCTL Meetings

Salina Central and Salina South play key league games tonight, both at home.

The Mustangs entertain Derby. The Central girls are 10-5 following Tuesday night's win at Hays. The Mustangs played possibly their best game of the season in dismantling the Indians, leading 41-17 at halftime. The Mustang boys are 10-5 and tied for the top seed in the sub-state after holding off Hays. Central defeated Derby on January 11th. The winner of tonight's boys contest has the inside track to the AVCTL Division I title. Pregame is at 5:50 with tipoff at 6 on SportsRadio 1150 KSAL.

Salina South's girls are tied atop the sub-state with Newton after Tuesday's loss to the Railers. The Cougars are 12-3 and host Hutchinson. The Cougars used pressure defense to build a big second half lead and rolled to a win over the Salthawks on January 11. In the boys game, South hung with Hutch for 20 minutes before the Salthawks pulled away in the first meeting. South has back-to-back wins for the first time this year after rallying past Newton. The Cougars are 6-9. Pregame begins at 5:50 with tip at 6 on Y93.7.

Southeast of Saline travels to Minneapolis to meet the Lions. The Southeast girls picked up a 50-43 win over Beloit on Tuesday night. Southeast used a 10 point performance from Calli Calahan to lead the way in the win. Southeast is 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the NCAA. The Southeast boys lost to state-ranked Beloit 46-27. The Trojans were led by Sam Koch’s 12 points while Kyler Besher added 10. The Trojans 8-8 and 3-5 in the NCAA.

Ell-Saline meets Remington in Brookville. The Cardinal girls improved to 12-3 and 5-1 in the Heart of America League with a 47-30 win over Marion on Tuesday and look to keep their winning streak alive tonight. The Cardinal boys lost 38-23 to Marion and are now 6-9 overall and 1-5 in the league. Kaleb Whitehair’s six points was tops for Ell-Saline.
