Maize Sweeps Salina South

After holding on to a first half lead, the Class 5A No. 5 Salina South Cougars fell behind early in the third quarter and couldn't get back in front, falling on the road to Class 6A No. 2 Maize 55-48 in the girls game.
Neither team scored until Cassidy Cook's free throws with 5:36 to play in the first quarter. The teams would exchange points until South used a 5-0 spurt to go up 11-6 with 2:03 to go in the quarter on a bucket by Janai Mitchell. South led 12-9 after one.
South would go back up 14-9, before Maize would rattle off five straight points with South's Megan Holloway on the bench in foul trouble.
The Cougars would respond and build a four-point lead again at 20-16, before Maize scored the final three points of the half to cut the lead to 20-19 at halftime.
In the second half, Maize would take its first lead at 24-22 and never trail again. South would tie the game at 27, but Maize would rebuild as much as a seven point lead at 37-30.
South would trail 39-35 to end the third quarter, but picked up the opening points of the fourth quarter to trail 39-37.
The Cougars had two chances to tie or take the lead, but couldn't convert, allowing Maize to go up by as much as eight, hitting free throws to close out the win.
Megan Holloway's 18 points leads Salina South, while Cassidy Cook adds 12. Maize's Keiryn Swenson leads all scorers with 22 points.
Salina South falls to 13-5 overall and 5-5 in AVCTL Division I, while Maize improves to 17-1 and 10-0 in AVCTL Division I.
The Cougars host Campus on Tuesday.
Maize used several big runs in each quarter to stretch out an early lead and cruise to a 67-30 win over Salina South in the boys game.
Salina South struggled with fouls early, as the Eagles built a 15-3 lead and led 15-6 after one.
The Cougars would close to within as little as five in the second quarter at 19-14 with 3:44 to go, but Maize would end the half on a 12-2 run to go up 31-16 at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles used a 13-2 run to push the lead to 26 in the third quarter and led 47-26 after three. Maize would use the final third quarter point to spark an 18-0 run deep in the fourth quarter, leading by as much as 38 in the 67-30 win.
Conner Ryan led Salina South with 12 points. Tavon Morrow had a game high 23 for Maize, while Aaron Show added 16.
Maize is 7-11, 6-4 in AVCTL Division I while South falls to 6-12, 3-7 in AVCTL Division I.
The Cougars host Campus on Tuesday.
