Advocates of children with dyslexia are hoping Kansas lawmakers will pass a bill this year that spells out how schools serve students with dyslexia.

A bill in the Senate would require schools to offer 90 minutes of specialized instruction per day outside the student's regular classroom time. That instruction would take place in smaller groups or one-on-one.

Some parents contend the measure is necessary because they say many children with dyslexia go undiagnosed and that if they are diagnosed, those students often don't receive the specialized instruction they need.

Dyslexia is a learning condition that involves difficulty with reading and spelling. Under federal law, students with dyslexia qualify for special education services.

Opponents say the bill is redundant and a violation of federal law.

Whatever happened to parents working with their kids? If they cannot then they should hire people to do so. Its not up to the state and ultimately the taxpayer to pay the bill for people's kids.

This is so unreasonable and why would they even consider it? Let the parents of the special education kids foot the bill I am tired of paying for someone's elses kids. I have my own to take care of.

Are you kidding me? You have no idea! I worked with my daughter everyday! Not everybody has the money needed to have a specialist work with their child not to mention that a lot of people live in small towns and don't have access to specialized help. The average teacher doesn't even know how to help a dyslexic student. It is ABSOLUTELY the states responsibility to provide an equal education to ALL children! Unreasonable? Seriously? I am a wonderful mother who does take care of her own children but teaching a dyslexic child is not an easy thing to do! Parents of dyslexic children need more resources to help their children be successful adults. We definately don't need idiots like you two who could care less about the success of our nation's future.

Ok then hire someone yourself to work with your daughter that is what the responsible person does. Its not up to the schools to work with kids like this.
