Police said Tuesday that Kimberly Walker had been strangled and had a blunt force injury. She was found Sunday in a Colorado Springs motel.
Army Sgt. Montrell Lamar Anderson Mayo, who was stationed at Fort Carson outside Colorado Springs, surrendered to police in Greenville, N.C., Sunday.
An arrest warrant affidavit quotes other soldiers as saying Walker was Mayo's girlfriend and that she had come from Fort Riley to see Mayo.
Mayo is being held without bail. Colorado prosecutors have begun the process of extraditing him.
Jail records didn't indicate whether he had an attorney.
