The Sacred Heart Knights hosted NCAA league and Saline County rival Southeast of Saline on Tuesday night in an opening round substate game. The Knights beat the Trojans for the third time this season, by a 57-41 score, to advance to the 3A Hillsboro substate semifnals.
The first quarter was much like the first two meetings between the teams. The lead went back-and-forth and SES had a 14-11 lead after the opening period.
Trailing 15-13, the first of five Brooks Brown three-pointers gave the Knights the lead by one point. As it would turn out, Sacred Heart would lead for the rest of the game. SES cut the deficit to 22-21, but the Knights scored the last five points of the first half for a two-possession advantage.
Sacred heart blew the game open by scoring the first 13 points of the second half to take a 40-21 lead. After three quarters, the Knights led 47-26.
The Trojans didn't go down without a fight and cut the 21-point deficit to 12 midway through the final quarter, but the lead was too much to overcome as the Knights went on for a 16-point win.
The Trojans end their season with a record of 11-10. SES was led by Easton Montgomery's 17 points. Ben Stutterheim added ten and Kendall Peterson scored seven.
Brooks Brown led Sacred Heart with 15 points. Tate Richards and Tony Chavez each scored 14, and Colton Von Lintel added nine off the bench.
The Knights improve to 13-8 and will face the winner of Marion and Hutchinson-Trinty in the substate semifinals. The Warriors and Celtics will play on Thursday with the winner matching up with the Knights on Friday. All remaining substate games for Sacred Heart will be at Hillsboro.
