Kansans have a chance Thursday and Friday to open their hearts, and their wallets, to help Salina Media Group radio stations Y 93.7 and Sunny 102.5 fight childhood cancer.

The stations are collecting money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and treatment of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Ranked the No. 1 pediatric cancer hospital by Parents magazine and the No. 1 children's cancer hospital by U.S. News & World Report, St. Jude is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children.

As part of the effort, children from fifteen area schools have been participating in the "Million Penny Challenge". The students are competing against one another to see who can collect the most pennies. The ultimate goal is to collect a million pennies, or $10,000.

As the event progresses, penny results are announced throughout the day. The school collecting the most pennies per pupil wins a pizza party for the entire school courtesy of Papa John's Pizza.
