Mustangs Swat Hornets

While on paper, it looked like Salina Central and Valley Center should play a tight, defensive game in the girls sub-state semifinal, it ended up being all Mustangs in a 65-29 rout on Wednesday night.

The Mustangs force numerous Valley Center turnovers in the first quarter, building a 16-4 lead.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs shutout the Hornets and use a 13-0 run to go up 29-4 at halftime.

In the second half, Valley Center's offense finally started churning, cranking out 16 third quarter points. However, Central poured in 26 in the quarter and led 55-20 after three.

With a running clock in the fourth quarter, Central extended the lead by one to the final of 65-29.

Emily Wood led the Mustangs with 22 points. Hailey Mayfield added 11.

The Mustangs are 14-6 overall and travel to Newton in the sub-state championship game on Friday night.

Valley Center ends the season at 12-9.
