Thursday Hoops Preview: South, Central Boys Take Floor
Mike Hammett - Thu 06:34 AM 02/28/2013
The sub-state focus shifts to Class 5A boys action tonight.
At Salina Central, the top-seed Mustangs host eighth seed Newton.
This isn't your typical one-eight match-up. The Mustangs are 1-1 against the Railers this season, losing 55-52 at Newton in December, then needing a late three to beat the Railers 43-42 on February 1 at Central.
A Salina Central win would give the Mustangs home-court advantage for a sub-state championship game.
Pregame coverage is at 6:50 with tip-off at 7 on KSAL.
At Salina South, the fourth-seed Cougars meet fifth-seed Valley Center.
The Cougars managed to grab the final slot for a home game in sub-state play after Friday's game with Derby was canceled and Valley Center lost at Maize South. The Cougars are 7-12 on the season while the Hornets are 7-13.
South took the head-to-head meeting with the Hornets this season, winning 61-48 on February 1. Justin Stonebraker poured in a career-high 27 points in the win.
The winner will meet the winner of the Salina Central/Newton game for the sub-state title on Saturday.
Pregame coverage is at 6:50 with tip-off at 7 on Y93.7.
