South Runs Away from Valley Center Late

The Salina South Cougars advanced to the sub-state championship game by pulling away late in a 60-42 win over Valley Center in Class 5A boys sub-state action.

The Cougars and Hornets swapped the lead six times in the first quarter alone, but South was up 15-12 after one.

In the second quarter, South built a four-point lead at 28-24, but the Hornets scored the final bucket of the half to pull within two at 28-26.

In the second half, South would build a six point lead with 5:45 to go in the third, but Valley Center rallied, pulling within one at 39-38 heading to the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, South led 43-42 with 6:35 to play, but then ended the game on a 17-0 run to pull away. The Cougars outscored the Hornets 21-4 in the fourth quarter.

Conner Ryan and Justin Stonebraker each scored 19 points for South.

The Cougars are 8-12 and visit Salina Central on Saturday. Pregame coverage is at 6:50 with tip-off at 7 on Y93.7.

Valley Center ends the year at 8-13.
