100 Sci-Fi Movies Stolen
Jeff Garretson - Fri 11:26 AM 03/15/2013
The Saline County Sheriff's Office is investigating a burglary in Assaria.
Homeowner, William Coolidge told deputies he had noticed some items missing around his house in the 100 block of E. First Street in Assaria, over the past several days.
Further investigation led him to notice a basement window screen had been damaged.
The Sheriff's Office says someone entered the home sometime between March 1st and March 14th - and removed 100 Sci-Fi movies on DVD, an Apple iPad computer, a box of assorted small novelty swords and tool box with tools.
Total loss and damage is listed at $875.

Number one I can see missing some movies possibly some tools but an Apple ipad or novelty swords I don't buy that at all. Looks to me some padding is going on for insurance monies.

Salina would have to build a 2000 bed jail if the county attorney procecuted all thes insurace fraud claims. The stories just do not make any sense and with that generally comes mistruths.

As a home owner, and someone who had renter's insurance when I rented I feel the need to inform you that the deductibles for insurance are rarely under $1,000. My insurance as a renter cost $25/month MORE to drop my deductible from $1000 to 500. I'm not saying it's not fraud, but your insurance cost rises when you make a claim, and with deductibles being generally high if it were fraud the guy would have only made about $375 from this scheme.

Sorry just because you had an insurance company that over charged you that is not anyone's fault but yours. Further adding more to what has been stolen then pays for the deductible. Very simple math for those that have had a good education.

Wasn't an insurance company over charging me. I call around, I check the rates. I also know (if they owned their home) the insurance company would drop them for making a claim on it. Also I explained in my post that he COULD have made a claim for $875, however making $375 hardly seems worth it. When I see people claiming they had $3,000 stolen, or things like that I could see the payout vs risk being worth it to them. It's obvious that the majority of the posters on this site aren't familiar with certain aspects of adult life and they would rather speculate than base ideas off experiences or research.

You might be asking, "Why would their insurance company drop them?" The answer is simple! If an individual is willing to make a claim over $375, they are willing to make a claim for anything, which means the insurance company cannot rob the individuals high and dry.

Being an adult and paying for insurance for many years your statements are misleading. Say his cd's are worth$900 and he has $500 deductible he nets $400. But it he pads it to $2000 he nets $1500 and this is what has been going on on alot of these police reports of stolen items.

DamiStac your statements are very correct. I know I am a homeowner too. But you are wasting your time trying to explain it to the trailer trash on here. They will never get it....LOL.

Aurora, my statement in this situation is based PURELY off the evidence in this article. The article says he had a loss of $875. Which means even if he has a $500 deductible, he only gets $375. It's not a lot, it's not worth messing with your insurance company. Not to mention, most generally the insurance company will try and rob you and tell you the values are less than what you paid. For example, the Ipad he might have paid $400 for is probably only valued at $200 by the insurance providers. I completely understand that fraud does happen quite often, but it gets kind of obnoxious that every crime posting on this site gets a reply of, "OMG SOMEONE IS COMMITTING FRAUD!!!! CALL THE COPS!!! OH WAIT THE COPS DON'T DO ANYTHING!!! IMPEACH THE CHIEF!"

Also, I'm not sure what was misleading about my statements. You don't pad your "claim" after you report it to police. You do it prior. Also, as someone who had a car stereo stolen once, the insurance company requires proof of ownership and proof of value to pay you for your loss. In that particular instance, my broken car window + my cd player was not over my deductible after "depreciation".

If your a crook proof of ownership is a snap with a computer and printer or friends that are willing to work with the crook. I investigate this as part of my job and deal with it all the time.

Sounds to me the only explaining that needs to be done is your incoherent babbling posts on here. You make no sense at all. Do you read your posts before you hit the "submit comment" icon? I think not. Like I said , you cant fix sp=^id. SMHL.

Aurora, that's all fine. I wasn't saying he didn't buy them somewhere else. I was only speculating on the claim itself. It just doesn't seem worth it. Yes people will do stupid things or illegal things, then again if you are going to attempt fraud against your insurance company it seems very unlikely that you are going to do so for chump change in the grand scheme especially for all the headache it involves. You say you investigate things like this for a living, yet you obviously aren't coherently reading my posts or following logic. I wasn't saying ALL of the postings on KSAL of "burglaries" or "stolen property" are legitimate. I was simply saying it is very likely this was legitimate. Furthermore, it is ridiculous that morons in Salina are so jumpy to complain without using their heads. It makes Salina look very stupid.
