It was a relatively quiet New Year's Eve for law enforcement in Salina. Though officers stayed busy with multiple calls, there were no major problems.

Police did stay busy, writing multiple DUIs, and also other alcohol-related citations.

Officers responded to several disturbing the peace calls, and several domestic disturbances. During one of the disturbances, an altercation in an apartment on Glendale Road, an officer tased an unruly person.

Salina Police conducted a special saturation patrol this year that included four additional officers and a supervisor spread out through town, specifically looking for drunk drivers. Saline County Jail records indicate that between midnight December 31st and about 4:00 in the morning January 1st, four people were booked in on driving under the influence charges and one person was booked in on pedestrian under the influence charges.

Police also responded to several fireworks calls. The first was at around 3:15 in the afternoon, when smoke bomb fireworks started a grass fire at 317 South 12th Street that caused $500 damage to a detached garage, an above ground swimming pool, and the grass.

New Year's Eve 2008 was relatively quiet as compared to others in recent history. Two years ago there was a shooting outside the Stiefel Theatre in Salina following a New Year's Eve Party. Three years ago a person was shot and killed during a party at the 4-H building in Salina.

Police say that typically New Year's Eve is quiet. Most people realize there are extra officers on patrol in most areas, and plan accordingly. Many people also take advantage of programs that offer free rides.
