Cleaner, greener energy could soon help power Greensburg.

The Southwest Kansas community, which was nearly wiped off the map by a massive tornado about two years ago, is rebuilding as environmentally friendly, or "green" as possible.

The City of Greensburg, Kansas Power Pool, and John Deere Renewables jointly announce their plans to develop the Greensburg Wind Farm. The Greensburg Wind Farm will consist of ten 1.25 MW wind turbines, and will align with the community's green rebuilding initiative. The project will be formally announced on May 2nd at the grand reopening of BTI Inc., a John Deere dealership and one of the many Greensburg businesses rebuilding from the rubble. If development milestones are met, a groundbreaking ceremony will be announced in summer 2009. Commercial operation could occur as early as 2010.

Kansas Power Pool, the municipal energy agency of which the City of Greensburg is a member, will be purchasing the electrical output from the Greensburg Wind Farm.
