The Kansas Board of Regents is shelling out $7.7 million in funding from the federal stimulus for special projects at Regents universities.

Board Chairman Reginald Robinson says the money will go to what he termed critical deferred maintenance projects on the campuses. The money amounts to only about one percent of the $825 million backlog of deferred maintenance projects.

Among the projects are more than $2.3 million for power plant improvements and utility infrastructure work at K-State and more than $2 million for a string of projects at KU, including fire code improvements, roof repairs and improvements in utility infrastructure and disabled access.

Robinson says the board will hand out more money in June targeting Washburn University and the state's community and technical colleges.
