An abortion opponent who made headlines in Kansas 20 years ago returns to the state this weekend to open a campaign office for a presidential run.

Randall Terry was one of the leaders of the 1991 "Summer of Mercy" abortion protests in Wichita, where authorities made more than 2,700 arrests over several weeks.

Terry, who is running as a Democrat, is using his presidential run to draw attention to his anti-abortion agenda. He is on a campaign swing through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Minnesota and Idaho.

Terry tells KSAL News that he is running against President Obama as a Democrat. He knows he can not realistically beat Obama in the Democrat Primary. He says "however, I could cause his defeat in the general election if I can get enough Catholics and evangelicals who voted for him in 2008 to not vote for him in 2010 specifically over the issue of child killing".

Terry says that as a candidate he intends to run an commercial during the Superbowl that shows aborted babies to "drive the issue of child killing to front and center of the American political debate".

On Saturday Terry is meeting with Kansas anti-abortion leaders in Wichita and Topeka. Sunday, is going to try and squeeze in a stop in Salina.

Can we also run a commercial showing all of our boys killed at war. Grown men who feel real pain, who's families suffer for the loss of thier child? Be realistic folks. How is justifiable to be ok sending boys off to war to die, but a woman can not chose to have a fetus aborted? makes no sense.

They come to Kansas because we have people like Pittenger who will write stories about them and get them in the news..If they were ignored they would have no reason to come.

stirthepot: you are correct!! These activist/zealots that are seeking public attention and free publicity seem to know our news media people here in Kansas will provide them with all the free publicity they need!! I would like to offer Mr. Terry the opportunity to take all of the children from Kansas in foster care, living in crack houses, being abused, living in DVACK shelters etc... with him when he leaves in order to provide them the love and a healthy environment they all need. If he has time to travel the Country to speak out against abortion, he most certainly could spend that time raising the Hundreds/Thousands of unwanted children that are already in our system!!

The dismemberment and murder of defenseless, voiceless, human babies does not have anything to do with men and women who volunteer to risk their lives to defend us. There is a very real difference between someone's life being taken from them without any say in it. Its about time that America wakes up to the abuses of children, both born and pre-born, and starts valuing innocent human life. This is what Mr. Terry is doing with his campaign and his ads.

kittydog313: There are more than 5,000 children in foster care in Kansas, around 850 children needing adopted, over 500,000 Nation wide. Now, I am not suggesting any of these childrens lives should have been terminated through abortion, the majority of these kids are ages 6yrs and up, their odds are not great in the system because everyone is more concerned with the newborn, cute, cuddly babies and overseas children. Some of these beautiful kids will never know the love of a stable, permanent family. It's my belief there should be more focus on these kids than on a woman's choice on what is in HER best interest, not yours!! Perhaps you would like to take about 50 of these children to help raise, Mr. Terry could take another 50, that would only leave about 4,900 more to worry about!!!

@kittydog313-- The thing is, Kitty, the brave men and women who volunteer to protect the United States, are not protecting the United States. The are off defending Kuwait, liberating Iraq, protecting South Korea, occupying Japan, Germany, etc. The Founding Fathers did not intend for their new country to become the world police.

@horsisaz--Exactly what would you have me prove? It's a well known FACT that our troops have 'liberated' Iraq, that they protect South Korea, and that they occupy places such as Germany and Japan. Perhaps you don't believe my comment regarding the Founding Fathers. How about YOU google George Washington's foreign policy. While you are at it Google Thomas Jefferson quotes on foreign policy. Here is one of them--"Peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations — entangling alliances with none." ~ Thomas Jefferson
