The driver was not hurt, but there was significant damage to his truck.

No one is hurt when a truck runs into the back of a Saline County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

According to the sheriff's office, 18-year-old Zachary Lowers was driving a pickup truck in the 400 block of West Kirwin.

Lowers was blinded by the sun, and ran into the back of a sheriff's office truck. The truck was legally parked in front of an off-duty deputies home.

Lowers was not hurt, but there was significant damage to his truck.

The crash happened at around 8:30 Thursday morning.

wow.... I see very little apparent damage to the Ford. Looks like the GMC/Chevy didn't fare too well, though. Better get a FORD, son.

Why are the sheriffs trucks allowed to be taken home? If not on duty personnel should drive home in their own auto's. Just another reason to get rid of the current sheriff. He is to old and needs to retire, he no longer can do the justice system any good.

If you are at all familiar with law enforcement officers, you will know that they are on duty 24/7/365. If they take a vehicle home with them, if they get called out for an emergency, they can go there immediately instead of having to drive to the station first. It has been that way for years, and what does the age of the sheriff have to do with that?

Mamma why should the taxpayers pay for trucks for each shift. This is not enterprise Kansas with one law officer. Salina has Patrols out there on 3 8 hour shifts. When was the last major crime when off duties had to respond to something from their homes. As to the age of the sheriff he is to old and should be made not to run for office again. Older people his age tend to loose both mental and physical abilities that are needed for a job like this.

Iamgonnagetu does have a very valid point, being a senior myself, I can attest to the fact as we get older, we do lose our edge. The job of Sheriff is a very important one, it requires a sharp mind, healthy body and someone that has some fresh ideas to combat the crime wave we have been experiencing in Salina. I have nothing against our current Sheriff personally, I do think it's time for him to step down and allow some new young Men or Women to take the reins. As for the cops/deputies driving the vehicles home, I personally do not think so many of them need to, perhaps a few in case of an emergency that requires them to get to a crime scene fast, and yes, I too have witnessed the use of these vehicles for personal uses.

Let's think this thru. If you only have exactly the number of vehicles you need, when one needs engine or body work you're without. Thus you need extras on hand. Vehicles last longer if you don't drive them 24/7. Keeping them all in one central location makes poor tactical sense, as a vandal or a tornado could take them all out. And, Sheriff K on a bad day knows more than Getu on a good day.

give me a break the old fart is only staying in office to get 90k a year. I would like to see him run down a criminal or subdue a person. He could not do it because he is to old. maybe a younger guy could not subdue someone but would stand a better chance. turn the old goat out to pasture.

12 hour shifts all the more reasons not to drive taxpayer trucks home. How much are we paying in overtime? How much of that 12 hours is spent parked along a road somewhere doing nothing and talking on their cell phones?

I won't touch on the inaccurate statements being made here, but this accident does point out how blinding the sun can be at sunrise/sunset. I am a little curious how much the damage repair for the department's truck is going to be; it looks like it won that battle.

Dear lamgonnagetu, first of all, the deputies work 12 hour shifts, don't get overtime and don't work every day like the police department does. They get to take the trucks home on the days they work. The trucks are parked at their houses so they can do something called sleep. You need to check your facts before you open your mouth about something you have no idea what your talking about!
