Kansas Sheriff Doubts Escapees Had Much Time to Plot

Ottawa County Sheriff Keith Coleman said Thursday the four men spent less than a week together in a section of the jail before Wednesday morning's escape.

Ottawa County Sheriff Keith Coleman said Thursday the four men spent less than a week together in a section of the jail before Wednesday morning's escape.

A Kansas sheriff says he doesn't think four state prison inmates who escaped from his county's jail had much time together for planning beforehand.

Ottawa County Sheriff Keith Coleman told Associated Press Radio on Thursday the four men spent less than a week together in a section of the jail before Wednesday morning's escape.

They were in the county jail because the state prison at Ellsworth was overcrowded.

Coleman says they used homemade knives to overpower two guards, get into the jail's control room and open doors.

Coleman says he and police quickly apprehended one escapee in Minneapolis, the Ottawa County town where the jail is located. Another turned himself in Wednesday at a Walmart in Nebraska.

Two others, including a convicted killer, remain at large.

Obviously that's irrelevant, they didn't need much time for planning because what they did worked!!!

Your right granny plus they were able to make weapons also. Keith is trying to cover his butt. The bottom line is by allowing these type of people especially murderers endangers the people of the town.

Why do you all blame him. He's just trying to add revenue to the City or county's bank account.Half the time you your local citizens dont even care wants going on in the jail.He just doing his job.My hats off to him for trying to ease the burden on the local tax payers of that community.

I really get a kick out of all you guys' comments. You obviously know everything so you can sit back here and talk crap on everything. I think guys will gripe about anything and everything just because you obviously have no outside life. I pity you.

gabbydom: I do not know "everything". However, You do not need much training and knowledge in this area to know, NO WAY IN HE#$ should a murderer(DBL!!!) have been sitting in a county jail in Minneapolis Kansas!!! I still would place the bulk of the blame on KDOC, the prisoners with convictions in such horrible crimes should never be "farmed out" to a small, county jail. No matter how "secure" it supposedly is, which, I would point out made absolutely no difference because they figured out how to make weapons and escape!! With all the non-violent ones sitting in prison, wouldn't they have been the more logical ones to be shipped to a small county jail?? I certainly hope the state corrections and KDOC look at this long and hard!!

As to the "adding revenue", I'm all for a way to increase the budget for a community to relieve tax-payers of the budget shortage. However, at what cost do you do this?? Should the safety of your community and surrounding communities perhaps be the the priority? I am not placing all of the blame on the Ottawa Sheriff, as I said, I believe the bulk is on the state and KDOC for this. So what if the jail was an approved facility for the "over-flow" on the crowded prisons, I think common sense should take priority in a case like this!!!

Really...according to KDOC, they have all been in the Ottawa County lockup since January. There are no common areas at the jail?

Here's one clue look at the sheriff he thinks he's in hollywood with the fancy sunglasses. Another clue if you here him talk on the interviews he is worst than Andy Taylor of Mayberry. How can someone like this have a position of this type?

The state wasted no time in getting the rest of their prisoners out of there. They hauled butt an removed them all does that tell you something.

Yeah, KDOC took the rest of their prisoners. The jail was a little short staffed after having 3 employees injured, and there was a rather large manhunt going on. Keep in mind that our jail does house other prisoners..there are still somewhere around 30 other prisoners there.
