A Salina man is planning a quest to walk across Kansas by himself.

Dean Bonawitz, a retired Salina Police Officer and cancer survivor, plans to walk across the state this June. The walk will be an attempt to raise money, and awareness, for Relay For Life.

Relay For Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of local American Cancer Society chapters. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

Bonawitz plans to begin his walk on June 4th at the Nebraska border, and travel south on Highway 14. His goal is to walk across the state to Oklahoma.

Bonawitz says that he plans to take the journey by himself. He will not have a support team with him.

The 67-year-old Bonawitz hopes to walk about 15 miles a day. He will carry a backpack, which will contain a tent, sleeping bag, and a few personal items. He will have a cellular telephone with him. He plans on eating at restaurants at communities along his route, and in between will munch on trail mix and jerky.

Bonawitz says that he beat Prostate Cancer, and his wife Nancy is a Breast Cancer survivor. All of the proceeds from his walk will be donated to Relay For Life.

In the article it says he plans to walk across Kansas and it says that he plans to walk across Oklahoma. Is this another typo or is he planning on walking across both.

The article says "Bonawitz plans to begin his walk on June 4th at the Nebraska border, and travel south on Highway 14. His goal is to walk across the state to Oklahoma. " His goal is to walk across the state (Kansas) to Oklahoma. Meaning, he plans on ending his journey when he gets to the Oklahoma Line. :)
